Turkey Bowl
One of the most notable traditions at the Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club is the celebration of the Thanksgiving season. The “Turkey Bowl” has taken place each Thanksgiving season since our opening, The Turkey Bowl marks the end of the Fall athletic season, consisting of the pep rally, play-off games, cheerleading, game predictions, the NBGC Band, and lots of supporters cheering on their favorite teams.
The celebration starts with the Pep Rally. Over the years, the pep rally has been held outside on the fields with bonfires, jam packed in the clubhouse game room, and in the Revere Park Field house. No matter the location, NBGC rallies rivaled those on even the biggest college campuses- full of NBGC spirit and pride. After the pep rally, the Turkey Bowl Games begin! NBGC Turkey Bowl Games are like no others, from running out onto the field and playing in front of big crowds, in all kinds of weather.
Everyone gets involved in the games. Leaders, staff and alumni work the fields and the “press box,” referee, and spend time walking the sidelines or meeting friends in the clubhouse. A long-standing trademark of the NBGC Turkey Bowl Games are doughnuts in the clubhouse and the banging of the milk can to raise money for NBGC. People from all over the neighborhood would come to participate, sharing doughnuts and cheering on the teams.
The clubhouse turns into a museum exhibit, showcasing pictures and articles through the years. After grabbing a doughnut, supporters, families, staff, and leaders walk the halls to reflect on NBGC’s history. That treasured tradition, in part, energized the Archiving Committee to post some of its work during the weeks leading up to this year’s “#GivingTuesday”. We hope you enjoy this look back at NBGC’s Thanksgiving classics… just as you would if you were in the game room with us on Thanksgiving morning.
