NBGC History

The Neighborhood Boys Club was founded in 1931 by Robert Buehler and Richard Valentin, two visionary men whose devotion and dedication made the organization what it is today.

The Club was born with a football game on Oct. 19, 1931. The Galloping Ghosts, named for the legendary Red Grange, met the Trojans that chilly afternoon. The teams fought hard and battled to a 13-13 tie, and NBC was alive and kicking. The first league champions were the Reveres. Football legend Red Grange, who went to school with NBC Founder Robert Buehler, came out to present their championship medals. What started off as a one-time program continued as Robert Buehler, along with co-Founder Richard Valentin, saw the spirit and enthusiasm of the boys.

The Club developed and prospered over the years, moving from Richard Valentin's garage to a wood framed house next to Revere Park, and finally into its current clubhouse. Dick Valentin retired in 1976. Richard Brandon, program director for 17 years, became Executive Director in 1977 and led the club for the next 19 years. His guidance helped the club grow and adapt to the ever-changing world around it. In 1997 the organization name was changed to Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club - reflecting our expansion into girls' programs.

NBGC has been an integral part of the community for 75 years. The Club is a non-profit organization that is independent from any other Boys and Girls Club. Operations are supported by alumni, parent and business contributions, foundation and corporate giving and fundraisers.

Members from 6 to 18 years of age participate in softball, baseball, football, floor hockey, soccer, basketball and teen leadership development programs. In addition we offer an After School Program, Computer Lab, a Discovery Program for 1st- 2nd graders, a Karate Class and a Summer Enrichment Program. Membership is free to the 1200+ girls and boys who participate on a yearly basis. Teams are organized by neighborhoods. The Club and its programs are popular with youth and parents alike.

The Club emphasizes sportsmanship and teamwork where all members, no matter their skill level, are guaranteed participation.

The program goes far beyond sports. Leadership skills, new friendships, and, most of all, a pride in oneself are the natural outcome of the unique Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club program.
